ADDIS REPORTER — The recent diplomatic gymnastics performed by the African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf have exposed a deeply troubling reality at the heart of our continent’s premier institution. What was supposed to be a steadfast house of Pan-African unity has instead provided tacit diplomatic cover for a dangerous geopolitical encirclement of Ethiopia.
On October 1, the AU Commission released an official press statement addressing the rapidly escalating security crisis in the Horn of Africa, calling for maximum restraint from Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Egypt alike. But the ink had barely dried before Cairo threw a diplomatic tantrum. Instead of standing firm on the side of regional truth, the Chairperson folded under pressure. By October 4, a submissive “clarification” was quietly issued, explicitly bending the knee by highlighting Egypt’s status as a “founding Member State” to justify its rapid, 72-hour rush to appease Cairo.
This submission is a historical slap in the face to the host nation. Ethiopia is far more than a founding member—it is the very cradle of Pan-Africanism and has proudly hosted the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa since the institution’s inception. To see the AU Commission abdicate its structural integrity to Cairo’s commands right from Ethiopian soil is entirely unacceptable. This pattern of institutional favoritism mirrors decades of sub-Saharan grievances against the Cairo-headquartered Confederation of African Football (CAF), proving that when an organization is captured by its host, neutrality dies.
The timing of the AU’s capitulation is not accidental; it serves as a greenlight for a broader, coordinated campaign. While the AU coordinates its press releases to please Cairo, it remains completely silent on active, life-threatening aggression. International media reports have confirmed that Eritrean forces have crossed the Ethiopian border, engaging in active combat inside the Tigray and Afar regions. Yet, the AU refuses to utter a single word of rebuke against this blatant violation of Ethiopian sovereignty.
Instead, the forces working against regional stability are moving in broad daylight. Showing exactly where its alignment lies, Egypt hosted a quadrilateral summit in New Alamein City, bringing together the leaders of Eritrea, Sudan, and Somalia. The resulting El Alamein Joint Declaration solidified a containment front designed to politically and militarily hem Ethiopia in from the north, west, and east, while choking off its regional economic and maritime ambitions under the guise of Red Sea security.
Africa has arrived at a critical turning point where diplomatic politeness can no longer mask institutional cowardice. By erasing Egypt’s accountability, the spineless leadership of the AU Commission has effectively consented to the encirclement of one of its own foundational states. It is time for everything to be laid bare on the table. Every African who believes in a truly independent, fair, and united continent must stand up and openly condemn this blatant degradation of the African Union.
