The military triumph in Tigray and the expulsion of the TPLF mark a significant turning point, far from causing an economic collapse. Ethiopia is positioned to surpass economic projections and accomplish a historic recovery by reviving Tigray’s economic engine, putting an end to widespread insurgencies, fostering investor confidence, and redirecting defence spending toward development.

ADDIS REPORTER – A heated discussion about Ethiopia’s economic future has arisen as military events in the Tigray region continue to garner international attention.
According to pessimistic foreign media reports, like those from Deutsche Welle (DW Africa), Ethiopia’s post-war recovery will be derailed, inflation will worsen, and long-term growth will be crippled by the conflict in the north. But this story ignores important macroeconomic, political, and military facts.
In my opinion, when we combine the federal government’s strategic containment with the IMF’s robust 9.2% GDP growth forecast: the complete defeat and removal of TPLF from Tigray is a fundamental catalyst for both national stability and rapid economic growth rather than an economic setback.
Accordingly, I consider five main forces behind this economic recovery. These are:
1. Reintegrating Tigray’s entire economic potential into the country’s GDP
For many years, the TPLF took control of Tigray, cut off the area from the rest of Ethiopia, and severed its crucial economic connections. Currently, TPLF fighters are being driven from almost every area of Tigray by federal forces:
. Infrastructure & Commerce Restored: Important business centers, governmental organisations, and industrial parks in Mekelle and the surrounding areas are now able to carry on as usual.
. Market Reconnection: Tigray’s commercial potential, labour market, and agricultural output will re-enter the country’s ecosystem, giving the GDP a significant and immediate boost.
2. Destroying the Main Cause of Regional Disasters
In addition to causing instability in northern Ethiopia, the TPLF has historically been the primary financier, armourer, and instigator of secondary insurgencies throughout Amhara and Oromia.
. A Significant Step Toward National Peace: By neutralising the TPLF in Tigray, anti-government forces throughout the nation will no longer have a central hub.
. Supply Chain Stabilisation: By securing vital trade routes and transportation routes, resolving proxy conflicts across regional borders directly reduces the inflation of food and commodities.
3. Unlocking a Huge Increase in Foreign and Local Investment (FDI & DDI)
Due to the ongoing threat of a new conflict with the TPLF, foreign investors and domestic business owners were reluctant to make significant financial commitments for years.
. Eliminating Political Risk: The TPLF’s final conflict and military defeat eliminate the lingering threat of ongoing hostilities that caused investors to be wary.
. Capital Inflow: Following the establishment of a lasting peace, Ethiopia’s major growth sectors like manufacturing, mining, agriculture, energy, and telecom (digital sector) will see a resurgence of both local and foreign direct investment (FDI).
4. Transitioning the Government Budget from Defence to Development
The Ethiopian government has had to invest heavily in the military over the last two to three years in order to strengthen defence capabilities.
. Fulfilling the Strategy: The government can reduce military spending after using this defence capability to defeat the TPLF.
. Economic Stimulus: Large military budgets can now be used to finance social services, build massive infrastructure projects, and expand public utilities in order to spur a long-term economic boom.
5. Maintaining Central Economic Infrastructure
Importantly, insurgent forces were prevented from advancing into central Ethiopia or destroying important industrial hubs by the federal government’s successful containment of the conflict close to Tigray’s regional border. As a result, capital city operations, the primary export infrastructure, and the nation’s production engine are all intact and prepared to grow.
The Bottom Line
The military triumph in Tigray and the expulsion of the TPLF mark a significant turning point, far from causing an economic collapse. Ethiopia is positioned to surpass economic projections and accomplish a historic recovery by reviving Tigray’s economic engine, putting an end to widespread insurgencies, fostering investor confidence, and redirecting defence spending toward development.
